A Hand Block Printing Journey That Chose Me
My connection with Indian textiles has always been active. I don’t just watch the craft; I become part of it. When I first visited the block printing workshops near Kolkata, I came not as a tourist or buyer, but as a collaborator.
What I found there made me feel both humble and excited.
Artisans leaned over long tables, moving their arms in steady, practised motions: block down, press, lift, shift, repeat. The air was filled with the smell of dye. The wooden blocks, smoothed by years of use, were carved with patterns passed down through generations.

My Vision Meets an Ancient Voice
Whenever I discover a traditional craft, I start by listening to it. I pay close attention, then begin a conversation with it.
My prints are not copies of tradition or museum pieces kept behind glass. They are made to be worn in everyday life: on a Tuesday, on a terrace, at a meeting, at a place of worship, or at a celebration. They are meant to be alive and moving.
I brought my own design style: geometric, intentional, and unique. I combined it with the traditional skills of the block printers. The result is sarees and fabrics that feel both grounded in tradition and fresh. They are minimal, confident, and made for women who know themselves.
Each design is hand-pressed onto the fabric, so no two sarees are exactly the same. Small differences in ink or shifts in alignment are not flaws. They are signatures, showing that a person made this for someone else to wear.
I have stood in the dim light of a village workshop and watched these designs take shape, with brick walls behind them and a tray of red dye glowing like embers. In that moment, you realise this is more than production. It is storytelling, ancient stories told in new ways every day.

Sun-Dried, Earth-Blessed
After printing, the fabric is laid on grass under the open sky to dry in natural light. I love this part because it reminds me that these fabrics touch the earth before they reach you. There is something grounding and honest about that.
What fascinates me about block printing is that it is both repetitive and unique. Even if the same block is used a hundred times, each impression is different. The hand may shake, the ink may change, and the fabric may move. Every saree from our studio carries its own story.
